French Quarter:

Ritz-Carlton - a beautiful hotel
921 Canal St, New Orleans, LA 70112
(504) 524-1331

Maison Orleans Hotel, "boutique" branch of the Ritz Carlton - this may be the best hotel option in town but it won't be cheap.

W Hotel
The French Quarter version is well located in a very old building that W has made feel quite contemporary. Small enough that you know you aren't in a mega-convention hotel.
316 Charters, New Orleans, LA 70130
(504) 581-1200

Chateau Sonesta - Only a few years old but built into an old building, huge rooms, I stayed here when it was just opened and enjoyed it very much.
800 Iberville Street, New Orleans, LA
504-586-0800, 800-766-3782

Very small / bed & breakfast type:

Claiborne Mansion - (in the Faubourg Marigny) In a fun and funky neighborhood next to the French Quarter, looks great from the outside but I've never been inside.

Cornstalk Hotel - beautiful old home with antiques, never been inside, great location, one of the more famous places to stay.
918 Royal Street, New Orleans

Nine-O-Five Royal Hotel - next to the Cornstalk, very similar to that.
905 Royal Street, New Orleans

Maison de Ville Hotel - slightly larger, less "antique-y," some rooms are two floors.
727 Toulouse Street, New Orleans

Small-medium sized / classic French Quarter hotels (50-150 rooms):

Bienville House Hotel - super location, recently renovated.
320 Decatur Street

Dauphine Orleans Hotel - used to be a favorite of my parents, still looks very nice.

Maison Dupuy Hotel - friends of mine were married here, very nice.
1001 Toulouse Street, New Orleans

Prince Conti Hotel - two "sister" hotels in the Quarter are Hotel St. Marie and Place d'Armes.
which also seem very nice
830 Conti Street

Big hotels in or very near the French Quarter (over 150 rooms):

Wyndham Hotel - high-rise looking over the Mississippi River, pool on the roof, convenient to almost everything. (FYI-there is another Wyndham here across from the Convention Center which is NOT in the Quarter.)

W Hotel - This W is Downtown rather than in the Quarter, is much bigger and more contemporary.
